about
Filmed in 1995.
- Suokalbis (trans. The Plot) – was a bar that has been established in Vilnius in 1992, instead of the buffet of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union.
- Suokalbis was a real treasure for a young artist. Here you could meet, get acquainted and socialize with a living icon, get a commission for an article, a translation or a review, give or conduct an interview. There was a lot of drinking and dancing on the tables here. Every Vilnius cabbie knew Suokalbis.
- Perhaps it was one of the most amazing bars in the world: a public space in Vilnius that experimented with the notion of absolute freedom.
- Writers, painters, actors, filmmakers, journalists, politicians, doctors, judges, customs officers, dickheads, the depressed, misfits, madmen, geniuses and the mediocre gathered here.
- You didn’t actually need any cash to get drunk; what you needed was for someone to leave a drink unprotected. Drinks didn’t belong to the people who bought them, as cigarettes did not belong to the people who had them in their mouths; beverages and smokes were simply placed into circulation.
- The demise of Suokalbis in 2010, therefore, represents a serious loss to Vilnius, a greater casualty than most people will recognize. We lost an irreplaceable public space.
